Ocean Freediving Boat Dive Expedition

Perhaps the holy grail of Victorian coastal freediving, you’ll explore the impressive coastline that’s inaccessible any other way than by boat. It’s the most remarkable highlight of the Mornington Peninsula.

With our purposeful, nimble, adventure-style vessel, we can approach the array of incredible sea caves and arches that line the Mornington Peninsula coast. Lining the coastline are underwater gullies, drop-offs, walls, overhangs, giant kelp and lots of stunning features. Probably Victoria’s most thrilling and rewarding underwater experience.

Make your way to Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula to meet your local guide and your rigid inflatable boat (RIB). Sorrento is around a 1.5hr drive from Melbourne.

Meeting at the Sorrento Pier at least 30 minutes before departure (allow more time in summer), you’ll be greeted by your Guide and introduced to fellow guests.

Slip into your wetsuit and listen to a short briefing on what to expect during the 3-hour boat excursion. Hop in to the boat and take your seat; it may be a lively ride.

Departing Sorrento, we’ll quickly gather pace and zoom our way towards the Port Phillip Heads to exit through the Rip out into Bass Strait.

Once through the heads, there exists fascinating coast, the remnants of many sunken ships and submerged reef systems. It’s not uncommon for whales to pass through in winter and the array of marine life is well known.

Be prepared for a lively ride as you begin to venture into territory little explored by freedivers. Bass Strait is certainly one of the most spectactular and challenging freedive locations around, attracting intrepid explorer types with strong and competent freediving skills.

More of an expedition than set course, the excursion will take you on an ultimate freediving experience. As options, the scuttled HMAS Canberra is a good 30-minutes journey away and rests in 30m of water. The J4 Sub is a little less far away and rests in 24m. On the Sorrento Backbeaches rests the Petriana and other shredded remnants close to the coastal shelves.

Heading the other direction along the peninsula, we’ll pass fascinating coastal cliffs, caves and buttresses. This is the ultimate sea-cave freediving experience. Getting closer to Western Port Bay we’ll begin our first dives, exploring the features of the rocky faces that plunge straight into the ocean. Drifting our way along the coast we’ll explore several large sea caves and find underwater walls, gullies and crests to peer into.

Be one of the early few to conquer the big blue of the Southern Ocean. At times on the trip, like all great pioneering adventures, there will be times when patience is required. However, you will become one of the privileged few to have experienced this area relatively unexplored by freedivers.

A physically and mentally demanding excursion, you should be fit and an experienced freediver in a range of conditions. Be prepared to assist your buddies and work with the group to create a great experience.

This is definitely one of the more challenging freedive excursions you’ll encounter, at the same time, conditions in Bass Strait can also offer amazing calm glassy seas, which are the days you dream of having out there.

Sea levels, surge, waves and swell can all vary dramatically, if you think you’re ready, then the challenge is yours. There is no doubt that this is an unforgettable experience, one that you will remember for the rest of your life.

If we can’t proceed through the Heads?

On all our coastal trips we endeavour to get out into Bass Strait, however, the weather has a big influence on our charters, and obviously we cannot control what the weather throws at us!  We tend to run charters in rain or wet conditions, however, as a general rule, we do not proceed in wind conditions above 20 knots, in that case we have an alternative trip in Port Phillip Bay when possible.

Alternative Itinerary

The Port Phillip Bay alternative may include the most recent wreck the Lady Cheryl (8m depth) in a precarious spot just inside the Port Phillip Heads next to the Rip. The Eliza Ramsden sits just beside the shipping channel (slackwater dive only 20m depth). Other sites include the Hurricane wreck closer to Rosebud or the search for the wreck at Portsea Hole which may confirm it’s just a tall story!
